How child support works
Every state sets child support by guideline, but the math differs. Most states use an income-shares model (both parents’ incomes combined, then split by share). A few use a percentage of the paying parent’s income (New York, Texas, Wisconsin, Alaska, Mississippi). Three states (Delaware, Hawaii, Montana) use the Melson formula.
