Set it up
You need a free LawCat account. If you don’t have one, create it at law.cat first, or create it when the sign-in screen appears.
Claude
- Open Settings → Connectors.
- Choose Add custom connector.
- Name it LawCat and paste
https://law.cat/mcpas the URL, then choose Add. - Choose Connect. A LawCat window opens: sign in and choose Allow.
- In a chat, turn LawCat on from the tools menu and ask your question.
On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner may need to add the connector for the organization first. Once LawCat is listed in the Connectors Directory, you can also find it under Settings → Connectors → Browse connectors.
ChatGPT
- Open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
- Back in Apps & Connectors, choose Create.
- Name it LawCat, paste
https://law.cat/mcpas the MCP server URL, choose OAuth for authentication, and create it. - Sign in to LawCat in the window that opens and choose Allow.
- In a chat, pick LawCat from the + menu and ask your question.
Developer mode is available on some ChatGPT plans, and menu names can change. Once LawCat is listed in the ChatGPT app directory, you can add it from there without Developer mode.
What it can do
The connector offers six read-only tools. They provide information, calculations and links; they cannot read or change your saved case, upload files, book appointments, or send messages.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
Check New York uncontested divorce eligibilitycheck_ny_divorce_eligibility | Checks preliminary criteria used by the legacy New York packet and identifies unanswered questions. This is not a determination that you can file or that a packet is ready. Direct packet generation remains held even if every preliminary answer matches. |
List the New York formslist_ny_uncontested_forms | Describes the legacy packet’s 12 forms and omissions. This is an informational catalog, not a list of forms currently available to generate in the connector. |
Estimate guideline child supportcalculate_child_support | Asks the questions for your state’s official guideline, then returns an itemized estimate. Covers 47 states and the District of Columbia. Numbers and choices only; calculation answers are not saved to your case. The court’s worksheet controls. |
Get a state’s divorce basicsget_state_divorce_basics | For any of the 50 states or DC: grounds and residency, filing fee, e-filing for people without a lawyer, official forms and self-help links, and whether document tools are publicly available, in preview, or unavailable. Legal facts include their recorded review date and must be confirmed with the court. |
Start your divorce papersstart_divorce_papers | Opens case intake with your state chosen and explains which selected drafts are publicly available. New Jersey remains preview-only. No state is promised a complete filing packet. Nothing is filed or sent. |
Talk to an attorneytalk_to_an_attorney | Tells you how to book a conversation with an attorney in the LawCat network through your LawCat account. Sends nothing on your behalf. |
Things to ask
- “Use LawCat to explain the preliminary New York packet criteria and its limitations.”
- “Which New York document tools are available in the LawCat workspace?”
- “Estimate child support in Texas with LawCat. I earn $5,200 a month and we have two kids.”
- “What do I need to know about getting divorced in Ohio? Use LawCat.”
- “Help me organize my New Jersey case and find official court resources.”
- “I want an attorney to look over my paperwork. How do I reach one through LawCat?”
What is shared
- Use the connector for state names, preliminary yes/no criteria, and child support numbers and choices. Direct packet generation is held; do not send names, birth dates, addresses or documents to request a packet.
- Never share a Social Security number. The connector does not ask for one and has nowhere to put it.
- The informational tools do not save your answers to a case. LawCat retains limited assistant tool activity logs, such as the tool name, account and connected-app identifiers, state, timing and outcome. These logs use a rolling retention window of two calendar years. Older events become eligible for deletion by an hourly cleanup in limited batches; failures or a backlog can delay removal beyond that window. Deletion is not guaranteed at an exact anniversary.
- This activity-log cleanup applies to LawCat’s operational database. It does not delete active connections, sign-in records, case answers or uploads, and does not automatically delete backup copies or information held by your assistant’s provider. See the retention details.
- Previously generated connector drafts remain private: download links expire after 24 hours, and files become eligible for the daily cleanup once at least 48 hours have passed since creation or last modification. Cleanup failures can delay deletion.
- The connector cannot read your LawCat case, file anything with a court, or send anything for you.
- Your assistant’s company also handles your conversation under its own privacy policy.
Full details are in our Privacy Policy.
Sign-in and disconnecting
LawCat uses standard OAuth sign-in. You sign in on law.cat and approve the connection, so your assistant never sees your LawCat password. Access tokens last up to one hour and can renew automatically. The connection expires no later than 30 days after approval, even when used regularly; sign in again to reconnect. Open Connected assistants in LawCat to review and disconnect an app, or remove LawCat in your assistant’s connector settings. To request revocation of every connection on your account, use our support page.
Limitations
- Drafts only. LawCat prepares documents for you to review. Nothing is signed, notarized, filed or served by LawCat.
- No legal advice. LawCat is not a law firm. Results are general information, and using LawCat does not create an attorney-client relationship.
- Direct drafting is held. The connector provides information and case-intake links. Selected drafts in the LawCat workspace have their own case-path and review limits; no complete nationwide packet is promised.
- Estimates are estimates. Child support figures follow each state’s published guideline as of the date shown; the court’s official worksheet and the judge decide.
- Your assistant can make mistakes. Check the documents themselves and the official court links rather than relying on the assistant’s summary.
- United States only. LawCat covers US state divorce procedures.
Help
Questions or problems: use the form on the support page, which also says what to include. We can’t give legal advice; if you want an attorney, ask the assistant to use “Talk to an attorney”.
