- We collect what we need to prepare your divorce documents: your account email, your interview answers and any files you upload.
- We do not sell your information, show you ads, or use advertising or analytics trackers.
- Your data is stored with our hosting providers in the United States. We share it with service providers that run LawCat for us, and with an attorney only when you choose to contact one.
- Assistant tool activity logs become eligible for deletion after two calendar years. Older connector drafts become eligible for cleanup after 48 hours; cleanup failures can delay deletion. The connector never asks for Social Security numbers.
- You can ask us to delete your account and data through our support page.

1. Who we are
LawCat (law.cat) is an independent divorce-document preparation service built and operated by WebRoyal (“LawCat”, “we”, “us”). LawCat is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. This policy covers the LawCat website, the LawCat app, and the LawCat connector for AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude.
2. What we collect
Information you give us
- Account information. Your email address and name, and a password if you set one. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and are never stored by us in readable form. You can also sign in with a one-time link sent to your email.
- Your case answers. The answers you give in the interview so we can fill in court forms: for example names, addresses, dates of birth, marriage and separation details, your county and court, and, if you have children, their names and birth dates. Depending on the forms, this can include financial information such as income, expenses, assets, debts and account details.
- Information about other people. Court forms require details about your spouse and children. Please give only what the forms need. If you choose to invite your spouse to complete their own part, we store their email address and the answers they enter, and we email them a private link that expires after 30 days.
- Social Security numbers. Some state court forms require a Social Security number or its last four digits. Where a form you are preparing in the LawCat app needs one, the app may ask for it so the form can be completed. The AI connector never asks for or accepts Social Security numbers.
- Uploaded documents. Files you choose to upload, such as bank statements or supporting documents. They are kept in private storage that only you and authorized LawCat staff can reach. New uploads are held until a malware check clears them.
- Phone number and scheduling details. If you give us a phone number or book a conversation with an attorney in the LawCat network, we store your phone number, your state, and the time you chose.
- Messages to support. What you send us when you contact support.
Payments
Preparing documents with LawCat is free for individuals, and LawCat does not collect or store your card number. Organizations that subscribe to LawCat pay through Stripe, which processes their card details under its own privacy policy. If you choose to hire and pay an attorney in the LawCat network through a payment page linked from LawCat, your card details go directly to that attorney’s payment processor, and LawCat keeps a record of the transaction reference, amount and status.
Information collected automatically
- Error reports. When something breaks in the app, your browser sends us an error report. It contains the error message and where it happened in our code, the page path (without anything after a “?”), your browser type, the app version, whether you were online, and your LawCat account and case ID numbers. Before anything is stored, our server removes email addresses, long numbers and sign-in tokens, and drops any field that looks like a name, contact detail, money amount or interview answer.
- How you found us. On your first visit, your browser saves the website that sent you (the domain only, never the full address), any campaign tags in the link, the page you landed on, and the time. If you later create a case, this is saved with the case so we know which channels bring people to LawCat.
- Server logs. Like most websites, our hosting providers record basic request information, such as IP address, the page or service requested, browser type and time, to run and secure the service.
3. How we use it
- To prepare your documents, save your progress and show you your case.
- To run your account: sign-in, security, and preventing abuse.
- To send emails you need: sign-in links, notices about your case, and invitations you ask us to send (for example to your spouse). If you give us a phone number, we may send reminders by text message; reply STOP to opt out.
- To connect you with an attorney in the LawCat network when you ask to.
- To find and fix errors, and to understand in aggregate how people find and use LawCat.
- To comply with the law and protect LawCat, our users and others.
We do not sell your personal information, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not use your case information to train AI models.
4. The AI connector (ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants)
You can connect LawCat to an AI assistant at https://law.cat/mcp. Connecting is optional. See Use LawCat in ChatGPT and Claude for what it does.
What the assistant sends us
When you ask the assistant to use LawCat, it sends us the information the tool needs, taken from your conversation:
- New York eligibility check: your yes/no answers and years of New York residence.
- New York draft forms: direct packet generation is held pending review. Do not send personal identities or documents to request a packet. Previously generated files may contain the identity and marriage information supplied when that tool was available.
- Child support estimate: the state and the numbers and choices the calculator asks for (such as incomes and the number of children). It is told never to send names, Social Security numbers or account numbers.
- State divorce basics, starting your papers, and talking to an attorney: the state you name for state guidance or case intake. The attorney-information tool takes no personal details or reason.
The connector never asks for Social Security numbers and has no place to put one.
What we keep
- The eligibility check, form list, child support estimate, state basics, start link and attorney tools work out their answers and return them. Their answers are not saved to your case. We retain limited operational metadata such as tool name, account and connected-app identifiers, state, timing and success or failure; it is not a copy of your conversation or document contents.
- These assistant tool activity logs use a rolling retention window of two calendar years. Older events become eligible for deletion. An hourly cleanup removes eligible events in limited batches; failures or a backlog can delay removal. This is not a guarantee of deletion at an exact anniversary. See How long we keep it for the scope of this cleanup.
- Direct New York packet generation is currently held. Previously generated connector drafts are stored privately, separately from your LawCat case. Their download links stop working after 24 hours. A daily cleanup job attempts deletion once a file is at least 48 hours old, measured from its creation or last modification, whichever is later. Deletion occurs on a successful cleanup run, not at an exact 48-hour deadline; failures can delay removal.
- The connector cannot read your LawCat case, file anything with a court, or send anything on your behalf.
Sign-in and tokens
The connector uses OAuth sign-in. You sign in on law.cat and approve the connection, so the AI platform never sees your LawCat password and we never see your ChatGPT or Claude password. We store a record of each connected app (its name and approved return addresses) and the sign-in codes and tokens issued to it. We store codes and tokens only as one-way hashes, together with the LawCat account they belong to and when they expire. Access tokens last up to one hour. Refresh tokens are replaced each time they are used, but the connection expires no later than 30 days after approval. Renewing access does not extend that deadline; a fresh sign-in and approval are required to reconnect.
The AI platform’s own handling
What you type into ChatGPT, Claude or another assistant, and the results LawCat returns to it (such as an estimate or a download link), are also handled by that platform under its own privacy policy and settings. LawCat does not control how the platform stores or uses your conversations.
5. Cookies and local storage
LawCat does not use advertising cookies, analytics trackers or tracking pixels. The app uses your browser’s local storage for:
- keeping you signed in;
- remembering how you first found LawCat (see above);
- saving unfinished onboarding answers on your device until you create an account;
- remembering display preferences, such as your dashboard layout; and
- returning you to an AI-assistant connection screen after you sign in.
Some features embed or link to other services, such as an appointment scheduler or a video player. Those services may set their own cookies when you use them.
6. Who we share it with
Service providers. These companies process data for us so we can run LawCat. They are not allowed to use it for their own purposes.
| Provider | What they do for us |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, sign-in and private file storage |
| Netlify | Website hosting and the server code that runs the app and the AI connector |
| Resend | Sending emails |
| Stripe | Billing for organizations that subscribe to LawCat |
| Text-message and file-scanning providers | Sending text reminders, if you gave us a phone number, and checking uploads for malware |
LawCat support and client services. Authorized people who run LawCat can see case information when needed to support you or fix a problem. When you reach certain steps (for example, finishing your details or your financial information), LawCat’s client-services team is notified by email with your name, your email address and the step you reached. That team includes staff who also work with attorneys in the LawCat network. They use these notices only to support you and to follow up on your case.
Attorneys in the LawCat network, when you choose. If you ask to talk to an attorney, book a conversation, or hire one, the information you give for that purpose goes to that attorney. Attorneys in the LawCat network are independent; they handle your information under their own policies and professional duties.
Organizations that use LawCat for their clients. If a law firm or other organization invited you to LawCat to work on your case, that organization can see and work on your case.
Your spouse, if you invite them. Your spouse sees only the document they are asked to complete and their own answers.
Legal and safety reasons. We may disclose information if the law requires it, such as in response to a valid subpoena or court order, or to protect the rights, property or safety of LawCat, our users or others.
Business changes. If LawCat is sold or merged, information may transfer to the new owner, who must continue to protect it as this policy describes.
We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
7. Where it is stored and how it is protected
Your information is stored with our hosting providers in the United States. All connections to LawCat use HTTPS. Access rules in our database limit each account to its own case. Uploaded files and AI-connector drafts sit in private storage and are reached only through links that expire. Connector sign-in tokens are stored only as hashes. No system is perfectly secure; if we learn of a breach that affects you, we will tell you as the law requires.
8. How long we keep it
| Information | How long |
|---|---|
| Account, case answers and uploads | While your account is open, until you ask us to delete them. Deleted data can remain in backups for a limited time before it is overwritten. |
| Drafts prepared through the AI connector | Direct generation is held. Existing links work for 24 hours; files become eligible for daily cleanup 48 hours after creation or last modification. Removal depends on a successful cleanup run. |
| Assistant tool activity logs | A rolling two-calendar-year window, measured from each event’s creation time. Older events are eligible for hourly cleanup in limited batches. Failures or a backlog can delay deletion beyond that window. |
| Connector sign-in tokens | Access tokens last up to one hour. Refresh tokens cannot extend the connection beyond 30 days after approval. The hashed records are kept for security. |
| Spouse invitation links | Expire after 30 days, or sooner if you revoke them. |
| Error reports | Kept for troubleshooting. They contain no names, contact details or financial values. |
| Support messages | As long as needed to answer you and keep a record of the request. |
The two-calendar-year cleanup applies only to assistant tool activity logs in LawCat’s operational database. It does not delete active connections, sign-in records, case answers or uploads, or change their retention rules above. It does not automatically delete backup copies or information held by your assistant’s provider; those copies are subject to their separate retention processes.
9. Your choices and rights
- See and correct. You can see and edit your answers in the app at any time.
- Delete. Send a request through our support page from your account email and ask us to delete your account. We will delete your account, case answers and uploads, except where the law requires us to keep something.
- Get a copy. You can download your documents in the app, and you can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Disconnect an AI assistant. Open Connected assistants in LawCat to review and disconnect an app, or remove LawCat in your assistant’s connector settings. You can also ask support to revoke all connector tokens on your account.
- Text messages. Reply STOP to any text from us.
- State privacy rights. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to know, access, correct, delete or get a copy of your personal information, and to not be treated differently for using those rights. We do not sell or share personal information for targeted advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of there. To use any right, email us. We will verify the request through your account email and respond within the time the law requires. An authorized agent may make a request for you with your written permission.
10. Children
LawCat is for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. We collect information about children only when a parent or guardian provides it because a court form requires it. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Changes to this policy
We will update this page when our practices change and change the “Last updated” date above. If a change materially affects how we use information we already have, we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect.
12. Contact us
